9th Annual NYSARH Conference

The 9th Annual NYSARH (New York State Association for Rural Health) Conference is being held on September 13th and 14th, 2010 at the Villa Roma Resort & Conference Center in Calicoon, New York.  The theme of this year’s conference is Growing Healthy Communities, with Keynote Speakers: James Knickman, PhD, President and CEO of the New York State Health Foundation; John Ruggae, MD, CEO of Hudson Headwaters Health Network; and Dr. Richard F. Daines, the Commissioner of Health with the New York State Department of Health.

The New York State Association for Rural Health is a not-for-profit, non-partisan, grassroots membership organization working to preserve and improve health and human services in rural New York State. NYSARH is a member of the National Rural Health Association.

2010 Novelis 10Kan Run

The 4th Annual 10Kan Run/ Bike event will be held on Saturday, September 18th, 2010 at the Brietbeck Park in Oswego, New York.  This event will once again include a Health and Wellness Expo!  September 18th should be an exciting day at Brietbeck Park with the 10Kan Run/ Bike as well as the annual Children’s Fun Run.  Registration for this portion of the even starts at 7am with the Wellness Expo opening at 9:00 am and running until 1:00 pm. 

Heading this event is Novelis Oswego Works with strong support from Oswego Health.  Their goal is to motivate the community to become healthier and to promote recycling.  All of the profits from this event go to Oswego County Habitat for Humanity. 

The 10Kan event was initiated in 2007 as a celebration of collecting 1,000,000 recycled aluminum cans to build a home for Habitat for Humanity.  The first home from the proceeds of the 10Kan event was built in 2008.  Another home was completed in 2009 and there is current work being done to refurbish a home in 2010.

2010 Senior Health and Information Fair

The 2010 Senior Health and Information Fair sponsored by Senator Darrel J. Aubertine, will be held at the Fulton War Memorial on Wednesday, October 13th from 10:00am - 2:00pm.  This year’s Fair will feature keynote speaker Dr. Smita D. Kittur, MD, who practices neurology and clinical genetics in Liverpool and Syracuse, New York. Dr. Kittur will be speaking regarding dementia related illnesses.  This year’s Fair will have many vendors throughout Oswego County offering health related services and information.  Lunch for the first 200 participants will be provided by the Rural Health Network of Oswego County and Senator Darrel J. Aubertine’s Office.  The 2010 Senior Health and Information Fair will also feature the Cayuga Cut-Ups Square Dancing group who will be performing and doing a demonstration!!  Don’t miss this wonderful event!!

2010 Oswego County Teen Health Conference~ ‘Healthy Choices 4 Life’

The 2010 Oswego County Teen Health Conference will be held at Camp Hollis in Oswego, New York on Thursday, October 28th from 4:30pm - 11:00pm through Friday, October 29th from 7:45am - 3:30pm, with overnight accomodations provided at the Camp. 

Over the past 13 years, more than 1,000 high school students have attended the Oswego County Teen Health Conference.  Here they have had the opportunity to explore critical physical and psychological health issues they face in our world today.  Students that attend the conference use this introduction to become invested lifelong learners that demonstrate their growth by pursuing avenues to become leaders in the community.  This program is provided free of cost to participants through grants and donations.  Transportation will be provided from designated points throughout the county.  If you are interested in bringing a group of young people you are expected to provide a minimum of one adult chaperone per every 10 youth.  The chaperone should accompany the youth on the bus in addition to providing supervision at the conference.
